Hastings' Ashtyn Stewart competes at Class AA state swim meet
Hastings seventh-grader Ashtyn Stewart surprised a lot of people when she took second in the 100-yard butterfly at the Section 1AA meet, including her own coach. However, head coach Katie McAlpin said it would be a valuable experience for the young swimmer to see what the state meet is like with no expectations for when she returns in the years to come.
Stewart swam in the Class AA preliminaries Thursday night, Nov. 15, and took 18th, just two spots out of making the consolation finals Friday night. She improved on her sections time by almost a second after swimming a time of 59.30 seconds, which was just 55-one-hundredths of a second out of 16th and moving on to day two.
Stewart was the Raiders' only representative at the state tournament after a tremendous season for the team and a Metro East Conference championship. However, they return nearly the entire team next year and will have a large and experienced senior class to guide them. Check back for more on Stewart and from McAlpin in the coming weeks.
